ASHLAND – The Ashland Junior Legion baseball team opened the 2019 season with a 3-2 win over the Elmwood-Murdock-Nehawka Nationals on May 22 at Nehawka.
The Bluejays broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the third inning. They added a single run in the fifth. The Nationals cut it to 3-2 with a pair of runs in their half of the fifth but could get no closer.
Caleb Juedes started on the mound for the Jays and pitched five strong innings in picking up the win. Ethan Scheer pitched a scoreless sixth to pick up the save.
Lane Zimmerman led the Bluejay hitters with a pair of doubles. Carter Washburn, Levi Kennedy and Scheer each had singles.
The Fort Calhoun Pioneers edged the Bluejays 2-1, on May 23 in the home opener at Jack Anderson Field in Ashland.
The Pioneers scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead and made them stand up.
Ashland had a rough time getting anything going offensively before pushing a run across in the seventh. But it was not enough.
Brody Maack was the starting pitcher for the Jays and despite giving up just one unearned run in four innings, took the loss. Max Bendler pitched the fifth and sixth innings, and Zimmerman pitched a scoreless seventh.
Washburn and Scheer lead the Jay hitters, each going 2-for-3. Juedes and Grant Buller each had one hit.
