OMAHA – The Waverly Empire Netting and Fence Senior Legion baseball team improved to 17-9 on the year after three more wins last week.
The week started with a 4-2 setback on the road at the hands of Fremont on June 17.
Waverly scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, but Fremont answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull out the win.
Waverly managed just two hits against Fremont, but played flawless defense behind starter Zach Brunssen who was flawless over the first four innings before struggling in the fifth.
Kaleb Carrillo doubled and scored on an RBI single by teammate Rhett Jordon. Jordon then scored on a sacrifice fly.
The Vikings were held hitless over the final four innings.
Waverly returned to the diamond on June 20 for a pair of games in Omaha against the Kansas Curve and the Moorhead Blues.
The Empire offense exploded for 15 hits and 10 runs while notching a 10-1 five inning win.
Carrillo and Jay Adams each finished with three base hits. Thatcher Kozal ripped a double, added two hits and drove in four runs. Jordon and Easton Hovelsrud also drove in runs.
All of the scoring was in support of starter Jonah Reiser who worked five innings to earn the win.
Reiser struck out five while allowing three hits and one run.
After scoring 10 runs against the Curve, the Empire offense struggled to score runs in the second game of the doubleheader against the Moorhead Blues.
The Vikings were able to pound out nine base hits, but stranded 11 runners leading to a 3-2 setback.
The game was tied at one in the top of the fifth, but Moorhead scored to take a 2-1 lead.
Waverly scored a run in the top of the sixth to tie the game at two, but Moorhead rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the victory.
Jordon started and pitched six strong innings, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out three and walking three.
Maverick Wylder relieved Jordon in the seventh and was tagged with the loss.
Nolan Brown drilled a solo home run in the fifth inning and Jordon blasted a solo home run in the sixth inning and the two paced the Empire offense by combining for four base hits.
Treyton Kozal and Sawyer Schroeder added doubles against Moorhead.
The Vikings were supposed to play two more games on Friday at Omaha Skutt High School, but rain forced the games to be moved to Saturday.
Empire started Saturday with a 3-1 win over Northfield.
The story of the game was Empire starter Ian Lanik who was dominant over seven innings while earning the win. He allowed just three hits and one run and finished with seven strikeouts.
Adams and Jordon drove in runs and Ethan Kastens finished with two base hits. Carrillo added a double.
Waverly capped the day on Saturday with a 6-5 come-from-behind win over the host Skyhawks.
Waverly trailed 4-1 before scoring three runs in the fifth inning. Skutt scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead going into the top of the seventh inning. Waverly rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Steinmeyer delivered the game winning hit in the seventh inning.
Brown finished with three base hits including two doubles and four RBI.
Treyton Kozal started, but it was Brown who earned the win after working the sixth and seventh innings.
