OMAHA – The Waverly Viking girls track and field team finish third at the Nebraska Track and Field Championships on May 17-18 at Omaha Burke High School.

The girls team scored 49 team points in Omaha and were led by another gold medal winning performance in the 300-meter hurdles by senior Abigail Clarke in the 300-meter hurdles.

Clarke made it back-to-back gold medals in the 300-meter hurdles Saturday afternoon after breaking the tape with a career-best time of 44.74, winning by nearly two seconds.

It was one of four state medals for Clarke who also added medals in the 100-meter hurdle event and as a member of the Viking 400 and 1600-meter relay teams.

Clarke finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (16.31).

She teamed with senior Sydni Schernikau, sophomore Maya Qualset and Grace Hartweg early Saturday to finish third in the 400-meter relay with a time of 50.19.

Saturday afternoon, the team of Clarke, senior Kira Keller, Schernikau and Hartweg added a silver medal in the in 1600-meter relay after combining to finish with a time of 4:05.62.

In addition to the relays, Schernikau also added medals in the 100 and 200-meter dash events.

She finished fourth in the 200-meter dash (25.87) and added a fifth place medal in the 100 after crossing the finish line with a time of 12.57.

Senior triple jumper Averie Lambrecht finished third in the triple jump in Omaha after jumping a season-best 36-1.25.

Senior discus competitor Tyza Hoos added five points for the Vikings after finishing fourth in the discus event with a throw of 134-3.

Sophomore Whitney Lauenstein added a sixth place medal for the Vikings in the high jump after clearing 5-2.

The boys team scored 21 points at the state meet and

finished 11th in the team

standings in Class B.

The highlight of the meet for the Vikings came in the rain late Saturday afternoon in the 1600-meter relay.

The Vikings made it back-to-back titles in the event after senior Carter Prang, junior Mason Nieman, senior Trent Weatherwax and senior Camren Mitchell combined to win the event with season-best time of 3:24.63.

Earlier on Saturday, the Vikings sprint relay team blazed to a season-best time of 43.44, good enough for third place. Team members included Nieman, Weatherwax, Prang and Mitchell.

Weatherwax, the defending state champion in the 400-meter dash, finished sixth in the event on Saturday afternoon with a time of 51.14.

Nieman left with a seventh place medal in the 110-meter hurdles after posting a time of 15.57 in Saturday afternoon’s final.
