GRETNA – The Waverly girls scored 140 team points at the Eastern Midlands Conference Meet in Gretna on May 2.
The Vikings finished 32 points ahead of runner-up Elkhorn at the meet and notched their fifth consecutive team championship.
“Both teams had a great day at conference. I am proud to say we have won this meet 6 out of the past 8 years. Looks like we are ready to have a fantastic district meet on May 9,” said Waverly Coach Ken Adkisson.
The Vikings got off to a great start in the field events.
Four first place finishes powered the Vikings in the field events.
Sophomore Whitney Lauenstein won the high jump after clearing 5-0.
Senior Averie Lambrecht won the triple jump with a mark of 35-8.25.
Senior Tyza Hoos won the discus event with a mark of 130-0.
Senior Val Gerlach won the shot put event with a heave of 38-1.25.
Senior sprinter Sydni Schernikau scored 18 points for the Vikings in the 100 and 200-meter dash events.
Schernikau won the 100-meter event with a time of 12.50 and finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.65.
Lauenstein and senior Abigail Clarke swept the hurdle events at the conference meet. Lauenstein won the 110’s with a time of 15.95. Clarke won the 300-meter event with a season-best time of 46.33.
Senior Alex Danson posted a season-best time of 2:26.93 in the 800-meter run and ended up third at the meet.
The sprint relay team failed to score after getting disqualified, but the 1600-meter relay team capped the event with a second place finish (4:17.32).
The boys team scored 127 team points at the conference meet and finished just two points behind meet winner Norris.
Ninety-five of the points came on the track for the Vikings.
Seniors Trent Weatherwax and Camren Mitchell combined for 18 points in the 400-meter dash finishing first and second with times of 51.02 and 51.63.
Sophomore Conrad Schroeder posted season-best times in the 800-meter run and 1600-meter run.
Schroeder won the 800 with a time of 2:00.61 and finished fifth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:38.47.
Viking senior Alex Murray swept both hurdle events at the conference meet. He won the 110’s with a time of 15.24 and the 300’s with a time of 41.35.
Junior Mason Nieman finished second in the 110-meter hurdles and sophomore Hogan Wingrove added a third-place finish in the 300’s.
Senior Carter Prang, Niemann, Weatherwax and Mitchell combined to win the mile relay with a time of 3:28.48.
Schroeder, junior Treyton Stovall and freshmen Billy Connot and Cole Murray combined to finish with silver medals after posting a time of 8:24.58 in the two-mile relay.
Freshman Trevor Brown led the team in the field events with a runner-up finish in the shot put (47-8.75).
Senior Logan Schuelke added a third place finish in the discus and teammate Kyle Goodban added a third place finish in the triple jump.
